First Class to Amsterdam for $78

Several years ago, my best friend and I found ourselves standing in the Atlanta airport waiting for a flight to an unknown destination, and hoping for a bit of good luck. He had landed a pair of "Buddy Passes" on Delta, and we decided to get the most bang for our buck by heading to Europe. The downside to a mostly free flight - we still had to pay tax - was that we had to fly standby, and as a result had no idea where on the continent we would wind up. We approached the gate for the first flight heading to Europe - Amsterdam to be specific - and not only did we get lucky, we experienced what some would call a miracle.

When boarding for the flight began, the gate agent called us to the desk and handed over a pair of boarding passes. In my excitement for simply making it on the flight, I initially overlooked our seat assignments. 1A and 1B....First Class. Surely, I thought, there had to be some sort of mistake.

For the first time in my life, I stepped onto a plane and turned left to find my seat instead of right. As I settled into the enormous comfy leather chair, I kept thinking that at any moment a flight attendant would ask us to head back to coach to make room for a paying customer. Sure enough, a few minutes later a flight attendant approached, and I feared the worst....

"Gentlemen, we have a problem. The Captain has informed me the plane is overweight, so we will need you to drink as much alcohol as possible before landing in Amsterdam."

We politely obliged this request, and spent the next 9 hours trying to figure out how we scored First Class to Amsterdam for $78.

  2. That was a fantastic score! You'd have a pretty tough time pulling that one off these days. Too many elites everywhere you go.
That was definitely something to be thankful for.

  3. Well Done!  Have you been back "up front" since?  It is always nicer when you get something like this unexpectedly.
